Day 1: Flying Like an Eagle (and Laughing Through It!)
Life of a Support Facilitator – Grades 4–5
Well… did I tell you that I surpassed my exercise goal on the first day? 😅
After spending all of last week creating detailed student profiles and printing data sheets, today was finally my first official day visiting classrooms. Let’s just say — no one warned me it would double as cardio!
Things They Don’t Tell You (But You’ll Learn Fast!)
-
Lunch time is more of a suggestion — if you can squeeze in 5 minutes, consider it gourmet dining.
-
If you’re going to reward kids, be prepared to back it up. (I may or may not have promised 50 Eagle Bucks for completing tasks… oops!)
-
Set your timer for each class, but make sure you can truly fly like an eagle to the next one.
-
Don’t forget your computer — but if you do, just wing it!
-
Invest in 3M command strips to Velcro heavy items to your cart. People may look at you funny when you roll by with what looks like a classroom on wheels, but own it.
-
When you make copies, check your settings — 1–2 sided vs. 2–2 sided can make all the difference!
-
Be ready for the moment a student proudly announces they want to “earn going home.” 😂
-
Small wins might go unnoticed by others, but they’ll make you feel amazing.
-
Try not to call someone by the wrong name… but if you do, just smile and move on!
-
If you feel like you’re interrupting a class, you probably are… but do it anyway — your job is important!
-
Plans are suggestions — especially when the teacher’s plans look a little different than yours.
-
Be prepared for kids to know you, even if you don’t know all of them yet.
-
Help others, even if they aren’t technically on your schedule.
-
If the class gets loud and you can’t hear yourself think, just go with it.
-
Elevator rides = bonus quiet time. Enjoy it while it lasts.
-
Hide strategically (with purpose!) to catch up on paperwork — sometimes survival means knowing where the quiet corners are.
-
And finally — remember: your job is never done.
Final Thoughts
If you can laugh, adapt, and keep your sense of humor, you’ll make it through anything the day throws at you. Being a support facilitator is equal parts chaos, heart, and hustle — but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Here’s to learning, laughing, and flying like an eagle 🦅 through every challenge that comes our way!
