Day 5: Finding Joy in the Everyday Moments
Life of a Support Facilitator
Today started with my morning duty, waving cars through during drop-off with my trusty stop/go sign and fan in hand. It’s a small routine that has quickly become one of my favorite parts of the day — seeing students’ smiles as they arrive and offering a cheerful “good morning” to start their day right.
Morning Adventures: Fire Drills and Phonics
There were a few absences in my morning class, but that didn’t slow things down. Just as we began, the fire drill sounded! Once everyone was safely back inside, I began testing a student on phonics and word lists, followed by another student who had been eagerly asking if it was her turn to test.
I also worked with a student I hadn’t spent much time with yet. Later, I conducted a few math diagnostic assessments and enjoyed seeing one student grow more relaxed in my space. He’s a bit of a puzzle — his comprehension skills are lower than expected, but his fluency and vocabulary are well above grade level. It’s fascinating how every student’s profile tells a different story.
By the way, erasable pens and gum have now become the hot-ticket items in my little reward system — everyone wants to earn them!
Midday Learning and Collaboration
Some students were out in the afternoon due to COVID and other viruses, but I was still able to meet with several and collect valuable data.
In one 4th grade ELA class, I helped a group of students write four sentences summarizing a story they had read. I loved being able to jump right in and support where needed.
Then I stopped by another 4th grade classroom during a prime vs. composite number activity. The teacher had students stand up for composite numbers and kneel for prime ones — an engaging and creative way to make math interactive! Of course, there’s always that one enthusiastic student who can’t resist shouting out answers, but the teacher handled it with such grace and patience. Watching her reminded me how powerful kindness and calm can be in a classroom.
Afternoon Reflections
The day ended with afternoon duty, making sure students safely got into their cars at cone 1. It’s simple, but it might be my favorite part of the day. I love seeing the smiles, hearing all the “Bye, Ms. Farr!” calls, and wishing everyone a happy weekend.
I found myself saying, “It’s Friday!” over and over — partly to celebrate the week’s accomplishments and partly to spread some extra joy.
Gratitude
Every day in this role reminds me why I love what I do. Whether I’m testing, teaching, redirecting, or waving cars through the pick-up line, I feel lucky to play even a small part in so many students’ days.
This week reminded me that sometimes the best moments come from the simplest interactions — a quick conversation, a solved problem, or a cheerful goodbye.
Here’s to another week of learning, laughter, and life as a Support Facilitator. 💛
